froknowsphoto.com When it comes to selecting a lens for a specific photo shoot there are so many factors that come into play. Do you want to shoot wide angle and have everything in sharp focus or do you want to shoot super tight and blow the background way out. In the video below you see Greg demonstrating how by just changing the distance to the camera the background will totally change. The first section of the video is being shot with the Nikon D3s 70-200 2.8 VRI at 200mm. You can see that the background is blown out but you can still make out the shapes in the background. In the second part of the video Greg got closer to the lens and all that changed was the focus. Now you can see that being closer to the lens the background has been totally blown out and anything in the back is unrecognizable. You don't always need to have the best glass or fastest F stop to blow out the background. If you get closer to your subject and have a deeper background you can still get a similar effect with a 5.6 lens. Sure it is harder to blow out shorter backgrounds but it is possible with just about any lens. Now lets look at what happens when you use wide angle lenses vs telephoto. When you use a telephoto lens you are compressing anything in the image, when you use wide angle you are doing the opposite of compressing. For example when I shoot head shots I love using my Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII because I can isolate my subject form the background. I zoom in as well as get closer to my ...

froknowsphoto.com A little while ago I asked who was in my general area and would like to come out and photograph a real baseball game with me. We had a lot of readers e mail in and I selected six to join me for a day at the Camden River Sharks game. This is a first in what I hope will be long running tradition of having readers join me on photo shoots to learn. This is the real world Super Secret Project where we actually go out and learn together. After taking a tour of the stadium to see where we were aloud to shoot from we sat in the dugout for a learning session. As you will see in the video we discussed the basics of photographing baseball. Everything from where we will be standing to proper composition to how not to get hit with a foul ball. Everyone had a blast learning and shooting. At the end of the video you will see a walk through of the images I captured as well as a critique of some of the readers photos. This is another long form video so let me know what you think of the format and what you are learning from it. froknowsphoto.com

Feb 16, 2012
www.Berger-Bros.com One of the most frequently asked questions posed by students new to the world of digital photography is this "What is the difference between a jpeg file and a raw file?" Yvonne Berger, head photography instructor at Berger Bros Cameras in long Island, New York, explains the difference between jpeg and raw files and breaks it down in a simple and easy to understand explanation. A jpeg file is a basic file that every digital camera is capable of taking. So, whether you're using a point and shoot or a digital slr, chances are the default setting is a jpeg file. The jpeg file gets processed within your camera. However, a raw file gets processed "post process" with an editing software program. Why shoot jpeg vs. a raw file? A jpeg file is easier to use and can be emailed, etc. A raw file needs editing software, like Adobe Photoshop Elements, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom...even Picasa...in order to be read. Benefits of jpeg 1) it's quick 2) easy to use, and 3) ready to go Benefits of raw files 1) better quality than jpeg So, which one should you use? Well, if you're using a lower end point and shoot camera then chances are you can't use raw...so you'll need to go with jpeg files. Some of the higher end point and shoot cameras can shoot raw by using the setting "jpeg plus raw".
